Mission

Buckaroo Traditions Gathering’s mission is to preserve and promote the skills and crafts of the Buckaroo and the role of these traditions in the cowboy culture of the American West.

Vision

Buckaroo Traditions Gathering envisions building an unparalleled gathering space for Buckaroos, Cowboys, Cowgirls, Western tradition enthusiasts, and community that inspires, preserves, and promotes tradition, art, and culture.

Event

Buckaroo Traditions Gathering (BTG) highlights and honors Buckaroo traditions and art forms that have been used in ranching over 150 years, that was handed down form the old Californios. This big loop roping and cattle handling competition will replicate the real-life working situations of the working buckaroo carried out on the large ranches across the Great Basin.

At BTG, we hope to protect the original art form, educate the public, and pass on these traditions. The idea behind this event is to show real life cattle working situations of the buckaroo (vaquero). To hang on to these age old traditions of getting your cattle & ranch work completed without the pressure of a clock.

The Big Loop Roping is judged by a team of real life working buckaroos, who are highly qualified and respected in the buckaroo world. The event will score competitors on the size of the loop, the distance thrown, the handling of their ropes, the control of the dally, their horsemanship, handling of the cattle, teamwork and style are all scored . Range raised cattle are roped out of “the rodear” (herd) as 3 person teams expertly sort them, lay them down for doctoring or branding.

The stock handling techniques of “Old California” and the Great Basin buckaroo are proudly represented. Horses must be ridden in traditional gear of old Californio or Buckaroo style: Snaffle Bit, Hackamore, 2-Rein, or Bridle.

At this event we invite you to pay attention to the skill and handiness of the teams. How they adjust with little to no words as they work their horse and cattle in true unison .These men & women have dedicated their lives to becoming the best hands in the cowboy/buckaroo industry. A feat they work on daily to achieve a level of perfection, that is ever growing .

Competition

The main Open Big Loop roping competition brings together the “best Buckaroos” across the United States to compete and showcase their skills. These “Top Hands” exhibit the highest level of horsemanship and stockmanship skills while roping and handling cattle in a 4 -part competition. Our judges are comprised of exceptional Buckaroos that have been cowboying, showing and involved in the cattle industry the majority of their lives.
